when seperating for the first time Just to let you know, the cup and the base do separate. Right where they rotate is where the separation happens. The channel that locks these two pieces together fit well and are tough to separate. I suspect each lot manufactures varies a little. If yours is hard to separate as my first was. You will even doubt if they are supposed to be separated but they are supposed to be. The best luck I had was to use a pallet knife/paint scraper to slide in that slot and then twist with some consistent pressure and that should help to pop the two pieces apart. Be patient it will happen. Suggestion...I filed the lip on the one piece to make it pop on an off easier. However if you aren't so inclined just leave them separated and save yourself a headache of trying to separate them while traveling. There is no harm in that other than it makes things a bit more bulky being separated for transport. Just wanted to offer some insight if you are getting one of these for the 1st time. As far as function goes. Its great and I use it a lot when traveling. Worth the money over trying to find distilled water everywhere.
